HANC up for National Excellence Award
The Housing Authority of Northumberland County is in
the running for a national award honoring superior assisted housing
and community development programs. HANC has been nominated for
its Roosevelt Court housing center.
HANC's nomination for a 2003 Award of Excellence comes from the
National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Office (NAHRO).
HANC has already won an NAHRO Award of Merit, which will be presented
later this summer. The Award of Merit jury nominated HANC for the
2003 Award of Excellence, due to be presented by NAHRO later this
year.
Roosevelt Court, which is also home to an education center used
by Luzerne County Community College, is the result of renovations
to the former Kulpmont Elementary School. After obtaining the building
from the Kulpmont School District, HANC turned the vacant school
into the site of 18 housing units for elderly residents as well
as a local campus for the Luzerne County Community College Nursing
Program.
Addressing two essential community needs in a creative fashion
such as this made the Roosevelt Court project unique and innovative.
"Programs like these set standards that are worthy models for
the public and private sectors," said NAHRO President Kurt
Creager. "NAHRO is proud of its members, who consistently go
the extra mile in providing service for residents and their communities."
